» FIELD TRIP TO ANNADANA SOIL AND SEED SAVERS

An educational trip to "Annadana Soil and Seed Savers" was organized in the month of August 2014 for classes 10-12.

A speech by Ms. Pavitra, a biotechnologist, gave the students an insight as to what could be expected in the next three hours. There were talks on "taking charge" of our food and awareness of GM crops, plight of Indian farmers and the need to save indigenous seeds. A short and crisp presentation on identifying a variety of fruits and vegetables was shown. The students then headed out to the farm trail - seed to plant processes - where they were shown methods of rain water harvesting, integrated farming techniques, pheromone traps (natural pesticides) and intriguing methods of oxidation of water using biodynamiser. Picking and transplanting allowed them to experience hands-on farming. Throughout the nature walk, they also enjoyed some of the organic produce of the farm. These included, North Eastern tiny fiercely spicy chilies, the utterly sour gooseberries and a tangy lemonade made from their in-house produce.

By the time theyreached the end of the trail, the students were carrying a bag full of memories to be cherished and they proudly came out of Annadana as amateur farmers with the want to carry out the vision of organic farming.
